Navertech, the Thurso based e-business solutions provider, has launched a new trading division, NaverEnergy. Heading up this new business stream is William McGillivray, a former senior engineer at UKAEA Ltd with 30 years of energy industry experience.

NaverEnergy will focus on providing engineering IT solutions in the regulatory controlled nuclear, marine (wave and tidal), wind, oil, gas, coal, solar and biomass energy sectors.

William has been responsible for project and design management of innovative technological solutions in the nuclear and renewables marketplace internationally and is looking forward to solving the issues posed by both existing and new energy sectors. In particular, he is excited by the opportunities presented following the Crown Estates Phase 1 Pentland Firth Marine Renewables announcement. “There are significant challenges ahead and engineering IT solutions will inevitably be at the heart of reducing the cost base of various aspects of this new development, we aim to be at the forefront”, said William.

Key challenges between now and 2020 will be better resource analysis and weather forecasting, better modelling of combined waves and currents. Manufacturing will require project management tools to ensure concepts are manufactured using existing or new technology within a prescribed cost. Installation, operation and maintenance will all require design software tools to prove the expected outcomes are achievable. Reliability and affordability will be a major consideration to any development and software tools are at the heart of meeting these goals. William added, “The future is bright, the future is green energy, to steal a well known phrase”.

As the rundown at Dounreay gathers pace a highly skilled and potent human resource becomes redundant. It is of vital importance to the Caithness economy that this resource is not wasted and we diversify into other energy markets. NaverEnergy will be exploring how this can be achieved to best effect with industry partners such as the Caithness and North Sutherland Regeneration Partnership, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, UHI Environmental Institute and the Caithness Chamber of Commerce.
